What’s the Difference Between the Britax G3 Car Seats and the G2′s?
“What’s the difference between the Britax seats on the market and the new G3 car seats?”
Let’s start with what has NOT changed, and then we’ll explain what Britax actually DID change in their G3 (Generation Three) car seats:
One thing that has not changed is the seat or shell size. This means that your child will fit just as comfortably in the newest 3rd Generation seats in all areas as she did in the 2nd Generation Britax car seats. The harness height, torso length, width, and head size by the head reinforcement remain the same.
Additionally, the new Britax models still sport the same safety features you are used to, including SafeCell technology and 360 degree side impact protection for the head, among many others that you can see here.
So what did Britax change? There are 3 new changes in the G3 seats.
Note: These 3 changes are relevant to the Britax Boulevard, Pavilion, and Advocate. Only change #3, the EZ Buckle system is relevant to the Marathon.
- Britax has a patented HUGS system with SafeCell Technology. They have now used this in the chest pads. These attach to the shell of the back of the seat through the harness slots and under the harness straps. This system is removable to get a better fit for infants or for cleaning. The SafeCells are designed to compress in a collision which helps absorb energy and create resistance if a child lurches forward. In the G2 car seats, SafeCell was only used in the base of seat; in the G3′s it’s used in the base and in the HUGS on the harness straps.
The end of this video demonstrates the SafeCell in the HUGS pads:
- The HUGS pads are now attached to the back of the car seat so that they maintain their ideal position. In prior models, it was possible for the HUGS to slide down the harness straps; now they must stay at the top, where they belong.
- There is a new EZ-Buckle system which makes placing and removing of a child easier and faster by keeping the buckle in a forward position. This eliminates that annoying ‘fishing’ of the crotch strap out from under your child’s bottom, after you’ve already placed her in the seat.
This video shows you the new features of the G3 car seats by demonstrating them in the new Britax Advocate:
So is it worth it to spend money on these extra features? That’s a trick question! Britax did not raise the prices of the seats despite these new features, so it doesn’t need to be a decision that you grapple with, as you can see here.
